Atelier
Although the Reggio-inspired pedagogy hails from Italy, the Italians chose the word “atelier” which means art studio or workshop in French. The Reggio adaptation of “atelier” is an inspiring studio made up of a variety of materials, mediums and tools that allow students to further their inquiries, explore new ideas, and express themselves. This space also enacts the philosophy of “The Hundred Languages of Children” that Loris Malaguzzi created. The educator who runs the Atelier is called the Atelierista. They are very involved within the classroom and observe children in order to create art based projects in the Atelier. They also work with small groups of children on long term projects based on the interests within the class. The atelier is an extension of the classroom and is an integral part of the Reggio Emilia Philosophy
